Edward is currently the Organ Scholar at Canterbury Cathedral. Ed read Music at Keble College, Oxford, where he was Organ Scholar (2022-2025). A growing interest in choral conducting and liturgical improvisation led him to apply for roles at Pusey House, an Anglo-Catholic chapel in Oxford, where he was first Organ Scholar (2023) and latterly Director of Music (2023-2026). There he conducted the choir of eight choral scholars, drawn principally from the top mixed-voice choirs in Oxford, as well as playing for Mass and cantoring for mid-week services.
Ed grew up in Kent and studied the organ with Adrian Bawtree whilst at the King’s School, Canterbury. Before Oxford, he spent a year in London, studying organ with David Titterington and Anne Page at the Royal Academy of Music.
A keen singer, he is also part of an early music ensemble, Antiquum Documentum, which organises concerts of Medieval and Renaissance polyphony and places this music in its original context by staging reconstructions of historical liturgies. The group has recently organised a Mass according to the Use of Sarum (the liturgy used by the church in England before the Reformation) and various Prayer Book services, such as 1549 Communion and 1559 Evensong. Recent concerts have featured the Messe de Tournai (the first collated setting of the Mass Ordinary) and Couperin’s exquisite Leçons de Ténèbres.
A secondary passion of mine is photography and some of my work has recently been published in Benjamin Ferrey: A Victorian Architect by Harry Spain (available from all good bookshops). This site also hosts a selection of my photos – you can find these collections under the Photography tab above.
In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, reading novels and coding.
